Dialogues of the Supersensual Life by Jacob Behmen (also spelled Boehme,Bohme)
Edited by Bernard Holland
Publication: 1901 Methuen & Co; London First Edition
Jacob Boehme remains one of the more formative mystics of all ages. His works, particularly those of "The Aurora" and "Mysterium Magnum" have inspired philosophers and resonated with mystics for the past several centuries. This small volume contains an inspiring preface. Behmen’s language and way of thought are often remote and strange. This is chiefly true of his earlier work, but among the works which he wrote during the last five years of his life there are some that are written in a thought-language less difficult to understand. From these the editor has selected some which may, in a small volume, be useful. The work starts with 30 sentences from Behmen’s treatises ‘Regeneration’ and ‘Christ’s Testaments’, and these are followed by four dialogues. The first three dialogues are a translation made by William Law, and found in MS after his death. The fourth dialogue called “The Way From Darkness to True Illumination” was taken by 18th century editors from a book containing translations of certain smaller treatises of Behmen. Ultimately this small volume serves as a great introduction into Jacob Boehmes mystical experience and concepts.
