The author, Frederick Carter, became a mystic symbolist artist involved with Aleister Crowley and worked on illustrations for D.H. Lawrence's Apocalypse. Carter taught etching at the Liverpool School of Art. By the 1930s he had largely turned away from printmaking to concentrate on writing though he continued painting into the late 1950s.
