The Sanctuary: Maha-Vira, A Founder and the Last Great Prophet of the Gainas, B.C. 500 by William W. Hicks

Publication Year: 1911, The Sanctuary Publishing Co., Boston
First Edition

An uncommon early American work on Mahavira and Jainism. This copy bears a presentation inscription from Prof. Agostino Levanzin to the “Metaphysical Club,” dated September 13, 1912. Levanzin was a Maltese intellectual and lecturer known for his investigations into fasting and human physiology, including his prolonged fast studied at the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory in Boston in 1912.

Additionally signed on the title page by Viola Kimmel, likely Dr. Viola Mizell Kimmel, an early twentieth-century lecturer and writer active in health, metaphysical, and psychical circles. An interesting association copy with early American metaphysical provenance.

Condition: original red cloth boards, spine faded and discolored with some rubbing and spotting, light rubbing and soiling to boards, minor wear to extremities, ink underlining to the book, binding sound, pages clean, we have taken condition into account in the pricing.
