The Secret of the Golden Calf SIGNED by Zakatarious
Publication: 1974 House of Zwillingsbruder Press; Berkeley, California first edition limited to 1000 copies
A very scarce 1974 Berkeley countercultural work advocating a revival of polytheism and a “polytheistic psychology,” centered around the symbolism of the Golden Calf. Zakatarious, the pseudonym of Blaine Blaine, famously displayed and publicly worshipped a large papier-mâché Golden Calf around the Berkeley campus before self-publishing the present work. Later known under the alias “Goldcatcher,” Blaine became involved in the Zodiac case through his controversial accusations against former underground newspaper associate Richard Gaikowski. Privately published in an edition of only 1,000 copies.
This copy signed and inscribed by the author, “Zakatarious,” by the author. Inscribed “For Ron, a real brother in Berkeley, May 24, 1975.” An additional inscription and drawing on the front free endpaper reads: “From the Man Who Once Opened to me a Sense of Self in the Pride of Will,” is dated 1981, though the authorship of the second inscription is uncertain
