The Shakespeare Fabrication by C. Mansfield Ingleby
Publication: 1915 John Russell Smith; London
The first edition of C. Mansfield Ingleby’s examination of the Shakespearean forgeries associated with John Payne Collier and his purported discovery of annotations in the Perkins Folio. Ingleby investigates the authenticity of these annotations, exposing them as later fabrications. The work also includes an appendix on the earlier Shakespeare forgeries of William Henry Ireland. An important nineteenth-century study of literary forgery and Shakespearean scholarship.
Condition: Finely bound in three-quarter leather with five raised bands to spine, some light edgewear, otherwise a nice clean copy in very good condition.
