The Handbook of Cartomancy, Fortune-Telling, and Occult Divination by Arthur Edward Waite "Grand Orient"
Publishing: 1897 George Redway; third edition
The 1897 edition of the Handbook of Cartomancy, first published in 1889, is one of Arthur Edward Waite’s earliest works. It was issued under the pseudonym “Grand Orient,” a name he used during his early career for popular occult and fortune-telling works in contrast to his more formal esoteric writings.
The 1897 third edition appears in Redway’s later decorative cloth, featuring the gilt Tetragrammaton device on the upper board, a design element absent from the 1889 first edition. This later binding is generally considered very desirable, reflecting the period’s growing interest in Lévi inspired occult symbolism.
Condition: publishers red cloth boards, title to spine and cover, corners slightly bumped, slight soiling along spine, pages clean, binding firm, overall in Very Good condition
