First and sole edition. Sixty full page color illustrations (62 subjects). The striking illustrations by Mo-No-Yuki are based on the author's descriptions. Traveller and naturalist Richard Gordon Smith spent time in Japan, where he recorded ancient Japanese myths and legends in "voluminous illustrated diaries", which also detailed his travels, sporting endeavors and experiences. During his time in Japan he sent interesting plants and animals back to the British Museum, some of which were named after him.
Condition: Elaborately decorated cloth boards with moon and flowering branch tree to upper boards and spine, spine edges are turned in, rear board with scuffing, flyleaf with contemporary inscription, tissue guarded color frontis, rear hinge looks to have been professionally reinforced barely noticeable, overall in Very Good condition
