LePlongeon's work drawn from twelve years of archaeological study in the Yucatan. This has been highly influential work. A volume influential to mme. Blavatsky, and heavily quoted in her 'Secret Doctrine'. Very difficult to find in an early edition such as this.
"Resemblances between the relics of the Mayas and the Egyptians can be explained, he thought, in no other way than by immediate relationship. The former, being the simpler, he would consider probably the elder. He advanced the plausible theory that the germs of civilization were borne from the Maya centre both eastward and westward, giving rise in their course to the circuit of primitive empires which has belted the globe and which is traced all the way through the islands of the Pacific, Malaysia, Japan, India, Egypt, and the lost Atlantis, which he believed to have bridged the Atlantic for the primitive peoples.
Le Plongeon discovered that there is an almost absolute identity between the language, the manners and customs of these prehistoric Yucatanese and those of Chaldaea, Egypt, Hindostan, Persia, Burmah, and Siam, and that an early and cultivated civilization, imagined to be of a higher type than any other, existed in Yucatan.
Le Plongeon inferred that, probably, the language spoken by the Native American of his present day Central America might have at least some affinity with that of the mysterious writings on the Mayan walls. Thus he devoted himself to a patient study of the living tongue as spoken by the fierce and warlike tribes known as the Quiches, who dwelt amidst the fastnesses of the mountains in Guatemala and who had maintained their independence against all invaders."
