Spiritual Reformers of the 16th and 17th Centuries by Rufus M. Jones
Publishing: 1914 Macmillan and Co Ltd; London First Edition
Rufus Jones provides a brief biography and overview of the works of several influential mystics from the 16th and 17th centuries, with a particular focus on the works of Jacob Boehme. Jones developed a fascination with Boehme during his exploration of mystical theology. Despite being one of the more underappreciated mystics of his time, Jones emphasized the importance of combining mysticism with social responsibility. He argued that the Quaker concept of “listening to the Spirit and being guided by the Inner Light of Christ” must be paired with a sense of duty: an appeal to help build a better world for future generations. He urged, “Keep your feet on the ground and get something done… A true and noble life must move forward on both these legs and not just one.”
