Original black cloth bordered in red, gilt title on spine, gilt and red illustration on upper board, colored top edge. A study of the practice of the blood covenant - the sealing of an oath or promise by blood or bloody sacrifice in various(mostly Ancient Eastern) cultures, and its meaning to western culture. This second edition, has an additional supplementary chapter, which includes new information that had come to light and addresses criticisms of the first edition (1885). Thus making this more coveted than the first edition. Scarce.
Condition: corners bumped, some wear to top and bottom of spine, book plate and annotation on first blank, a few pages seem to have erased pencil underlining but barely noticible, boards and decorative gilt still bright, overall Very Good condition.
