The Mysteries of Magic of Eliphas Levi With Biographical and Critical essay by Arthur Edward Waite
Publication: 1974 University Books
Originally published in 1886, this was the first significant English translation of Lévi’s work. According to R.A. Gilbert, A.E. Waite’s biographer, Waite was so inspired by quotes from Eliphas Lévi that he found in Blavatsky’s “Isis Unveiled” that he sought out a copy of Lévi’s major work, “Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie,” and began translating it into English. However, Lévi decided that an anthology of these translations would be a more appropriate release. Waite then collaborated with publisher George Redway to create what ultimately became “The Mysteries of Magic.” This 1974 reprint includes a new foreword by Leslie Shepard.
