This is an exact facsimile of the well-known 1659 french edition. Thus, text in french. A very nice reproduction in sewn binding, cloth resembling vellum, and hand made paper. Azoth, ou le moyen de faire l'or caché des philosophes, de frère, know in English as Azoth of the Philosophers, contains some of the most recognizable engravings of alchemical lore. Basil Valentine was the pseudonym of Johan Tholde, a salt manufacturer in Germany who lived roughly 1565-1624. "Modern scholarship now suggests that one author was Thölde, but that others were involved. Thölde published the first five books under Valentine's name."
