Spendor Solis by Salomon Trismosin - Translated by Jocelyn Godwin - Introduction and Commentary by Adam Mclean

Publishing: 1991 Phanes Press

Splendor Solis is possibly the most well-known text of late 16th-century alchemy, primarily due to the beauty of the often reproduced illustrations from the illuminated manuscript version in the British Library. However, until now, students of alchemy had to rely upon a poor, paraphrased translation made in the 1920s, which made a true appraisal of the text impossible. In this new, definitive edition of Splendor Solis--The Splendor of the Sun--Joscelyn Godwin has translated the text from the original German and has consulted five primary sources. This translation is coherent and easily readable, and does justice at last to the work of Salomon Trismosin. Included in this edition are reproductions of the 22 engravings from the German edition of 1708, and an introduction and commentary by Adam McLean which helps to explain the significance of both the illustrations and the text. Highly illustrated.

Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks Series Editor: Adam McLean The Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks series is a long term publishing project which aims to make available, in a uniform series, some of the most important texts of the Hermetic tradition which have previously been unavailable except in special collections and libraries. The cream of Hermetic material is included in this series, drawing from texts on occult and magical symbolism, and important alchemical, Rosicrucian, mystical and allegorical material of the 16th and 17th centuries. These are not merely reprints of early books, but new editions translated from the original Latin or German, which include extensive commentaries and historical notes.
