The Mysteries of Magic of Eliphas Levi With Biographical and Critical essay by Arthur Edward Waite
Publication: 1974 University Books
Originally published in 1886, this was perhaps the first significant publication of Lévi’s work in the English language. According to R.A. Gilbert, A.E. Waite’s biographer, Waite was so inspired by the quotes of Eliphas Lévi that he encountered in Blavatsky’s “Isis Unveiled” that he decided to acquire a copy of Lévi’s major work, “Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie,” and began translating it into English. Lévi concluded that an anthology of these translations would be a more suitable release. Waite then collaborated with publisher George Redway on what would eventually become “The Mysteries of Magic.” This 1974 reprint includes a new foreword by Leslie Shepard.
