The Codex Perez and The Book of Chilam Balam of Mani Translated and Edited by Eugene R. Craine and Reginald C. Reindorp
Publication: 1979 University of Oklahoma Press First Edition
This translated edition of the Codex Pirez presents a unique collection of Maya documents compiled by Don Juan Pío Pérez (1798-1859), an early nineteenth-century Yucatecan mayor. Pérez recognized the importance of preserving Maya culture and language, which were rapidly disappearing, and began collecting manuscripts as a significant interest. After retiring, he dedicated himself to studying the ancient language and chronology of Yucatán, gathering original Maya documents and copying those he could not acquire. Sir J. Eric S. Thompson noted that Pérez provided valuable service by preserving and copying key texts, including the books of Chilam Balam and Yucatec-Spanish dictionaries.
