Sinnett and his wife Patience moved to India in 1879, where he was the Editor of the English daily The Pioneer, and where he met H. P. Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott. He wrote voraciously on Theosophical subjects, including this work, in which he explores the beliefs and practices of Buddhism from an esoteric viewpoint.
