An Historical Essay Concerning Witchcraft. With observations upon matters of fact; tending to clear the texts of the sacred scriptures, and confure the vulgar errors about that point. And also two sermons: One in proof of the Christian Religion; the other concerning good and evil angels..

Publication: 1720 R. Knaplock, a second edition with considerable Additions

A second edition of Hutchinson’s pivotal work, “An Historical Essay Concerning Witchcraft.”Francis Hutchinson, plays a crucial role in challenging and debunking the widespread superstitions surrounding diabolical witchcraft. Hutchinson emerges as a powerful advocate for the many innocent individuals, often referred to as "the miserable creatures," who faced horrendous fates, including hanging or burning, due to accusations of witchcraft.

One of the most significant portions of his essay is Chapter 5, which focuses specifically on the witchcraft trials that took place in New England during the late 17th century. This chapter provides a detailed account of the infamous trials that culminated in the tragic executions of nineteen people. Hutchinson does not shy away from critiquing key figures involved in these events, particularly Cotton Mather, a prominent New England Puritan minister who played a notable role in the Salem witch trials of 1692-1693.

Through his thorough examination of the trials, Hutchinson seeks to illuminate the irrational fears and cultural hysteria that led to such grave injustices, ultimately advocating for reason and compassion over superstition and persecution.
